Thought

this drawing didn't want to leave my head for a long time now. It actually did because of certain even - I was challenged to draw something for the topic "Born from thoughts" and I like this vision so much, that I decided to paint it. I am not super happy with the result, it could be better, but I have just left this picture as it is. I gave up and simply consider it done.

All questions or comments are more than welcome! I'll try to include additional information about the drawing if it's needed.

I start with an empty sheet of paper (2000x2000 pixels, 300 dpi) and sketch all that I want to draw. You can see some bubbles there, I didn't include them after all. I painted them, that was the original idea, but I like the version without them a lot more. On the separate layer I add some first background color and on another one - I try to draw the embryo. On the last picture of those three you can see below I paint rest of the background and add some small, bright dots. I paint everything with soft brush with low opacity, that's why edges are so blurry.

On the separate layer I try to paint the face but dark background is really bugging me. I also have trouble deciding on the facial expression I should give my girl. Color scheme of this picture is making it more difficult for me and I decide to ignore colors and just fix them later on. Seems that side view of the face is too troublesome for me as it is, not even mentioning strange colors. I also add some skin texture on the separate layer, drawing it (as always) with small dots.

I fix face edges, to make them less blurry and add some cold light on the tip of the nose and on the forehead. I also close her lips since her expression irritated me greatly... ;) I do it by cutting off her jaw and rotating it a tiny little bit to make her lips close. Then I fix all the bugs that came out during this operation. On the first picture from the ones below you can see how she looked right after the expression change. After that I remake lips a little.

I move to the eyes and lighten shadows on her eyelid a little. I also start drawing eyebrows and forget about them later on, although I really should have payed some more attention to them, ugh... I guess something made me stop drawing at that point xD Maybe cats? I don't really remember. Well when I think that face is ready I move to the embryo again, to fix his edges and enhance shadows and lights. I also add some glow.

On the separate layer I add hair to my character and on the underlaying layer with the face I add ear. I finish it quickly and leave the hair a lot sketchy for a while. I need to fix colors first. I create a new layer and change its blending mode to "Color". On this new layer, with a huge soft brush, I paint different colors on the whole picture, looking for tones that I will like best. I also add layer in mode "Soft light" and add some light to the embryo and front part of girl's face. You can see how it went on the last picture.

After those new colors finally sink in I create new layer in the "Multiply" mode and add some shadows to the edges of the picture. Now my embryo is the only light in the dark ocean of thoughts :D I also start painting hair again. With very small brush with high opacity I slowly draw those single strands. I try to use a variety of colors. Hair is placed above the color layer I added earlier so it's not a problem ;) Placing it below would result in hair being awfully flat. As a finishing touch I add some very bright strands of hair - they are reflecting the light coming from the embryo.

After adding some more flying-light-dots my drawing is done :)
