This drawing was just a detail practice ;) Sometimes I just want to draw a portrait, it's simple enough, at least simpler than full body, so for stress release and practice - blueish portrait of some random girl, hopefully worth looking at. While painting I realised that I should probably practice drawing some objects, I'm not really proud of those flowers... Maybe some still life next time then?...

Of course comments and questions are more than welcome!

I start with a sketch and plan the whole picture. In this particular work a lot of detail came round in the middle of painting, I didn't even think about feathers, tears and small wing near her ear. It all just seemed to fit at some point. The sketch itself was just a foundation for facial features. Right after drawing it I chose big, round and soft brush and pick some colors for my portrait.

Slowly I try to put some detail on this face, I shape eyes, lips and nose. She seems to be familiar somehow, but I have no idea who it is... Well, knowing my luck it's probably someone from university whose face I copied into my head :D Her face is slowly starting to look human, I paint shadows first and then add light to move things up to the higher dimension. I also add small highlights on the nose and checks to make them "stick out" more.

I paint her left eye and when everything seems to be in place I look at her carefully. Sometimes it's good to stop for a moment, look and something else (or someone else) and justify your drawing again. When you are not sure about anatomy it's easy to make a mistake so looking at some random photos while working, just to check if you did something stupid, might be a good practice. As for me and this portrait - I decided to move her left eye a bit closer to the nose and lower. Then I remove parts of the sketch which are still visible from underneath the color and make blurry lines less blurry :D

I play with her hair a little bit but black one is surely the easiest one to paint. Dark shadow covers almost everything so the only thing I do is to draw some individual strands with a small brush and highlight part of her bangs. When I get bored with playing hairdresser I switch to the face again, to paint some detail. I start with ton of small dots, which are meant to be skin pores. They are both lighter and darker than the base skin color, depending on the place I am putting them. After the dot-shower I fix edges - nose and lips. I paint some lights and dark lines on her lips to make them look more natural. Those are very hard for me to paint, I am rarely pleased with the result...

I lose epic battle with girl's lips and move my attention towards the eyes. I paint eyelids and an idea struck me, to add a tear. I follow that thought and it did cost me some time but I like the result. I add some highlights to the place where tear fell and also some soft shadow.

After making my girl cry I decide to paint some hair ornaments. I have no special plan or clarified idea. I just paint whatever comes to my mind, hoping it won't be a disaster. That's how I came up with that small bird wing, ribbons and strange flower composition. I start with the biggest flower and petal after petal... I struggle.

Yeah, I really do..! This wasn't easy, wasn't quick and sadly - isn't good either. I reached this point when I don't like it but don't know what is wrong anymore. I will really need to practice painting flowers if I am to be good at that. Plants in real life do not like me much but come on, I want to at least paint them properly!...

Feathers are way easier for me. Not to mention those ribbons. And after all this - the time to make her hair look better finally came. Earlier there was no point to do that as I would just paint over half of my work while adding hair ornaments. Now I can fix that hair on the back of her head and change light in place where hair hides beneath flowers.

What's left is the background, for which I have no idea whatsoever and I do not really care. I did what I wanted - some practice for painting details - and background seems to be completely not interesting now. At first I paint some dots (just to put something there, really) but soon an idea with feathers came and yet again I go along with it. So pillow fight for the background, sounds good to me.

Then, finally, I look at the portrait some more, searching for mistakes. I remove blue shadows from girl's neck and add some more detail to few feathers.

I add my strange signature and it's done!
