Autumn

This time a simple portret, painted for Tut-z :) I believe it went fine and she is quite similar to herself, but I guess some parts of the drawing could be a little more detailed... Sometimes I really am too lazy, meh. This or other way - she was quite happy with the outcome and I had my practice so everything is as it should be. And now to the tutorial!...

Oh, as always - please tell me if you spot any mistakes or something is not clear or you want more detailed explanation. I'll be happy to help!

I started with a sketch and this time I had to try extra-hard to make use of this sketch later. I wanted her to be similar to herself, so even on the sketch I have to be able to recognize her and somehow be able to "see the final result". If it's not the case then the whole sketch is better of gone because it won't provide any guidance anyway. When I am finally satisfied with it I move on to the background - I put on some colors and dots, with which I want to create a bokeh effect ;) After that comes base color for face and some first spots creating facial features.

It's finally time for some distinct parts of face. At first I paint nose for a little while but quickly move to the eye. After this lips come. Everything is painted with soft brush (opacity is lowered to about 50%). I try to use as many colors as possible and achieve effect of orange lighting. There is still no detail on this face but it doesn't bother me now, what is most important is to preserve the similarity with the model.

When I finally move to detail I start with adding some highlights on her nose and lips, next I move on to hair. Honestly speaking I did not pay much attention to it, as I am a terribly lazy person =_= Right after that I draw a part of neck and arm, but those are not crucial parts of the picture so I paint them really quickly and roughly. Then it's the true detail. first step is smoothing sharp edges between areas of different color. We don't want that on her face ;)

I paint over nose and eyes a little bit, correcting small mistakes and adding some sharper edges. I draw around pupils and place additional light inside her eye to make her look more intense and interesting. Eyebrows and eyelashes are painted too, at first they were too blurred. Next I use big, soft brush with low opacity and add more warm color to the face. Thanks to this everything blends together nicely. At last it's time to paint all those little leaves and autumn-related things in her hair. I start with a dark, large leaf ;)

After going through several photos of dried leaves I managed to more-or-less copy leaf texture. When it's done I move to other elements, painting small acorn, branch of rowan, some more leaves and small, dried flowers. The more the merrier :D

Finally I add some oranges, like I did before with her face, for things to fit together better. After that I spend a little while to draw lighter strands of hair and add some more light to girl's hair. When everything seems to be ready I add some white dots and tiny flies near her head, just to make things more interesting ;)

Then I play with contrasts a little to check whether I can improve my drawing a little bit. When I am please with the result I add a signature and everything is ready :)
